There’s no better way to start another day in paradise with a good stretch and a spot of quiet contemplation, so its little wonder that yoga studios have begun to proliferate in Langkawi over the years. Whether you’re looking for one off classes, or are planning a dedicated, multi-day yoga retreat, these yoga studios let you commune with nature while you rejuvenate mind, body and soul.
1. Langkawi Yoga at Ambong Ambong Rainforest Retreat
The ultimate health and wellness sanctuary for both yoga faithfuls and novices alike, Langkawi Yoga run retreats out of the beautiful Ambong Ambong, a boutique seaside resort set on acres of lush tropical rainforest on the southern end of the island. Langkawi offer weekend retreats (the perfect stress-busting short break) and longer courses focusing not just on yoga but on meditation, traditional healing arts, nature and culture.
2. Yoga Now Malaysia
For those looking for an affordable retreat and not requiring much in the way of luxury, Yoga Now’s retreats are an excellent choice. Based on traditional hatha yoga techniques, Yoga Now run a variety of courses (4 days/3 nights minimum), with optional accommodation in simple but tidy lodgings close to Cenang Beach. There are ‘Relaxed’ yoga and meditation retreats offering plenty of free time, as well as an ‘Intensive’ course and a ‘Nature Discovery’ retreat, which includes outings to Kilim Geoforest and a Matchinchang rainforest trek.
3. Yoga at the Four Seasons Spa
The spa at the Four Seasons Langkawi runs daily group yoga classes and private sessions open to both guests of the resort and visitors. There are a variety of classes available to suit everyone from beginners through to hardcore enthusiasts, including yoga classes with exercises based on the elements – air, light, earth and water. For something a bit different (and a lot of fun), try their stand-up paddle board yoga classes afloat on the water at Tanjung Rhu Beach.
4. Yoga at the Westin Langkawi Resort and Spa
The plush Westin Langkawi boasts one of the best health and wellness centres on the island. Yoga sessions at the Heavenly Spa, overlooking the Westin’s private stretch of beachfront, are held mornings and evenings every Sunday and are complimentary for guests. Private classes are also held on request, including “Fly Yoga” sessions – a unique form of elevated yoga that involves performing flips, twists and other gravity-defying poses from a “yoga belt” suspended from the ceiling.
5. Vivanta by Taj on Rebak Island
The eco-chic Vivanta by Taj is one of Langkawi’s most exclusive resorts, nestled on Pulau Rebak, a private island about a 7-minute boat ride from Cenang Port. The Vivanta receives rave reviews for its creative multi-day ‘Yoga in Paradise’ retreats. Suitable for beginners up to intermediate level students, the retreats include beachfront yoga classes, breathwork, meditation, song and dance.
6. Villa Kelapa
Villa Kelapa is a boutique getaway located about 20 minutes inland from Kuah town and Pentai Cenang, hidden away amid Langkawi’s rice paddies and rubber trees. Among the traditional Malay-style houses elegantly renovated by German-born, long-term expats Michaela and Volker is a dedicated yoga studio. It’s here that guests can take part in daily yoga classes, while gazing out over views of Villa Kelapa’s gorgeous tropical gardens and the verdant paddy fields beyond.
