SkyCab Langkawi: A Ride to the Sky

Sjy Cab Langkawi
Skycab Langkawi

Skycab Langkawi takes you on a journey to the sky, offering a thrilling, fun-filled experience unlike any other on the island. The SkyCab is a cable car service that boasts one of the steepest inclines in the world, reaching an angle of 42 degrees. Some say that riding it feels like a slow-motion roller coaster going up the mountain. With panoramic views of the Andaman Sea, dotted with the islands of the Langkawi archipelago, SkyCab is more than a cable car ride — it is a must-do experience for any visitor to Langkawi.

Getting There

The base station of SkyCab is located in Oriental Village, in Pantai Kok. It is about 18 kilometres from Pantai Cenang, and catching a taxi or Grab (Malaysia’s ride-hailing equivalent to Uber) is the easiest way to get there. If you are driving a car or a scooter, free parking is available at Oriental Village. It is better to arrive early in the morning to beat the crowd and to avoid the possible afternoon showers. The air is clearer in the morning, allowing for better panoramic views.

The SkyCab experience

The SkyCab has three stations: Base, Middle, and Top, with a total ride time of around 15 minutes. The ride from the Base to Middle Station features one of the steepest cable car gradients in the world. It’s the part where you truly feel like you are rising vertically in the sky. The rapid height gain creates a dramatic change in the scenery, with views of waterfalls, the Andaman Sea, and the Machinchang mountain range rushing into view before you can say “wow.” Be sure to snap your photos before reaching the Middle Station, which takes a little more than 10 minutes.

The Middle Station is about 60 meters below the Top Station and serves as a scenic stop before continuing the journey. Enjoy the views from here and take some time for the Eagle’s Nest SkyWalk, which features a glass-floored platform jutting out from the mountainside — complete with a couple of oversized eggs in a nest for photo ops.

The top station sits at 708 meters above sea level, and all passengers must disembark here. Explore the circular viewing platforms with 360-degree views of the Langkawi archipelago and the Andaman Sea. The top station also provides access to SkyBridge. You can take an inclined elevator called the SkyGlide to reach it or opt for a short jungle trail for a bit of extra adventure. A restaurant and souvenir shops are available here for hot meals and memorable merchandise.

The SkyBridge

A 125-metre-long, curved bridge supported by a single pylon, the SkyBridge is designed with a singular purpose: to maximise the viewing experience. It provides a shifting perspective as you walk across its length, offering unique views of the rainforest, the mountains and the sea. The SkyBridge requires an additional ticket, separate from the SkyCab, but it is well worth the experience. The bridge is open throughout the day but may close temporarily during bad weather for safety reasons. Wear comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to hike from the Top Station to the SkyBridge.

Tickets and tips

The ticket prices for SkyCab come in multiple tiers. The Standard Gondola is the best choice for most visitors. The Glass Bottom Gondola adds an extra thrill, letting you see directly below as you glide above the rainforest. Premium options like VIP Gondola offer privacy and enhanced comfort. Combo tickets that include other attractions like SkyDome, SkyRex, and the 3D Art Museum are also available and often come at a discounted rate.

Early morning is the best time to visit to beat the crowds and avoid long queues at the gates. You can also purchase an Express Lane ticket to skip the line and board the gondola faster. Tickets are also available online, which saves time and may even offer small discounts. Keep in mind that the SkyCab may temporarily close due to weather conditions, so check the forecast before planning your trip.

SkyCab Day planning

With the convenient location of the Base Station in Oriental Village, there are many ways to combine the SkyCab experience with other activities. With so many options within walking distance, a visit to Oriental Village is best enjoyed with leisurely exploration.

Why not have a hearty lunch or a quick snack at one of the 95 outlets in the village, then visit nearby attractions like the 3D Art Langkawi Museum or the SkyDome. You can also go on a guided hiking experience with SkyTrail, or just spend the afternoon shopping at one of the many souvenir and speciality shops in the village. Other nearby attractions, just a short drive away, include the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls (Seven Wells) and Pantai Kok Beach — perfect for rounding off the day.

A visit to Langkawi is not complete without seeing the island from a whole new perspective — literally by rising above it. So don’t miss the SkyCab experience.
